Getting a professional detail is one of the best things you can do for your car. But what happens between visits? The truth is, a few simple habits can make your detail last significantly longer — and keep your car looking sharp every day. We asked the Prime Shine team for their best advice.
What is the most important thing car owners can do to maintain their car between professional details?
The most important thing is to protect the surfaces you just had cleaned. For the exterior — wax or ceramic coating. For the interior — UV protector. These two things make the biggest difference between details. Exterior surfaces keep their shine longer. Interior surfaces keep looking new for much longer.
After Your Detail — The First Week Matters
How often should you wash your car between details — and what is the safest way?
After every full detail at Prime Shine we apply wax or paint sealant to your car. For at least one week after your detail — do not wash the car. Let the wax and sealant fully bond to the paint. After that week — we highly recommend washing at home or simply wiping the car down regularly. Whatever you do — do not bring it to an automatic car wash. Those machines will scratch your paint and destroy the wax we just applied.
⚠️ Wait 1 week after your detail. Then wash at home. Never automatic car washes — they destroy everything we just put on your car.
Virginia Beach Weather Tips
What should you do immediately after it rains in Virginia Beach?
If it is a sunny day after rain and the car is wet — wipe it down. Do not let the water sit and dry on the paint on its own. Water spots form fast in Virginia Beach's climate. Even better — wipe it down and apply a light coat of wax while you are doing it. That keeps the paint protected and prevents water spots from forming.
Simple Habits That Make a Big Difference
What simple habits make a big difference for interior maintenance?
One of the best habits you can build is keeping a couple of clean rags in your car at all times. When bird droppings land on your car — wipe it off immediately. When tree sap gets on your paint — treat it right away. Both are acidic and the longer they sit the more damage they do. Having a rag ready means you can act fast before the damage becomes permanent.
💡 Keep rags in your car at all times. Bird poop and tree sap are acidic — wipe them off immediately before they damage your paint.
🧻
Keep Rags Ready
Always have 2–3 clean microfiber cloths in your car. Bird droppings and tree sap need immediate attention.
🚿
Wash At Home
Hand wash or rinse at home after the first week. Never use automatic tunnel car washes — they scratch paint and strip wax.
🌧️
Wipe After Rain
Don't let water dry on your paint in Virginia Beach's climate. Water spots form fast — wipe down after every rain.
🅿️
Park Smart
Garage is best. Shade is second best. Avoid parking under trees — sap and bird droppings will undo your detail fast.
☀️
UV Protect Interior
Apply UV protector to your dashboard and interior surfaces. Virginia Beach sun will fade and crack unprotected interiors.
🧴
Use the Right Products
Interior products for interior. Exterior products for exterior. Never mix them — wrong products cause more damage than no products.
Recommended Products for Home Use
What products do you recommend for home use between details?
For home maintenance products we highly recommend either Meguiar's or Chemical Guys. Both are professional quality brands that are safe for your car's paint and interior surfaces. Armor All and similar brands — we do not trust them that much. They can leave residue, attract dust, and some of their formulas are not ideal for long term paint care.
Meguiar's
✓ Recommended
Excellent wax, interior cleaner, and detailing spray. Professional quality, safe for all paint types.
Chemical Guys
✓ Recommended
Great range of car care products for home use. Wide selection for both interior and exterior.
Armor All
✗ Avoid
Can leave residue, attract dust, and some formulas are not ideal for long-term paint care. Not our recommendation.
The Biggest Mistake Car Owners Make
What are the biggest mistakes car owners make between details?
The biggest mistake is using the wrong product for the wrong surface. We have seen someone put tire shine inside the car — on the dashboard, door panels, everywhere. Tire shine is made for rubber tires. Putting it inside the car does not help at all — it actually damages your interior surfaces and leaves a greasy residue that attracts more dirt. Always use products that are specifically designed for the surface you are cleaning. Interior products for interior. Exterior products for exterior. Never mix them.
Parking Location — It Matters More Than You Think
How does parking location affect how fast your car gets dirty between details?
Parking under direct sun — over time will cause sunburn to your paint and fade your clear coat. Parking under a tree — most likely you will get tree sap and bird droppings on your car. Parking in a garage — the best option by far, protects from sun, rain, sap and birds. If a garage is not available — shade is better than full sun. Just keep those rags ready for the sap and bird droppings.

💡 Interior lasts 3 months. Exterior lasts 2 months. Ceramic coating is the only permanent solution for Virginia Beach drivers.
The reality of living in Virginia Beach is that the salt air, humidity, and sun work against your car every single day. The only truly permanent protection you can get for your exterior is ceramic coating. Everything else needs regular maintenance.
