Q&A With the Prime Shine Team
What is the hardest thing to remove from a car exterior?
The hardest things to remove from the exterior are tree sap and strong water spots. Both of them can contaminate the clear coat and give us a really hard time. The longer they sit on the paint the deeper they go — and the harder they become to remove without damaging the surface.
What about inside the car — what is the hardest interior mess to deal with?
From the interior the hardest thing to deal with is heavy pet hair. It gets embedded deep into the fabric and sometimes gives us a really hard time. On top of that, glue or gum stuck to the interior is also extremely difficult — those materials bond to surfaces and require careful treatment to remove without causing damage.
Can you share a real story of something that was extremely difficult to remove?
One job that stands out was removing a sticker from a car — it was the original sticker that had been on the vehicle for a long time. Just that one sticker took around two hours to remove and get the surface smooth again. People do not realize how much time and care goes into something that sounds simple. Another memorable job involved slime that a child had spilled inside the car. The family did not touch it for around six months. By that time it had gone deep into the fabric. Just one small spot took a minimum of one to two hours to treat properly.
What is your process for removing tree sap and water spots?
We use a step by step approach depending on how bad the contamination is. We start with specialized chemicals — usually three to four different products. If those do not remove it we move to clay bar treatment. If the clay bar does not work we go to wet sanding. After wet sanding we do a full polish on the affected area. And finally we apply ceramic coating to that section to restore and protect the paint. It is a long process — but it is the right way to do it.
Our Step-By-Step Removal Process
- 1Specialized Chemicals — We try 3 to 4 targeted chemical products first, matched to the specific contaminant type.
- 2Clay Bar Treatment — If chemicals alone are not enough, clay bar decontamination pulls bonded particles from the paint surface.
- 3Wet Sanding — For deep contamination that has bonded to the clear coat, controlled wet sanding removes the affected layer.
- 4Full Polish — After wet sanding, the affected area is fully polished to restore gloss and remove any micro-marring.
- 5Ceramic Coating — The final step seals and protects the restored paint so contamination cannot bond as easily in the future.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long
What happens if a car owner waits too long before treating tree sap or water spots?
This is very important to understand. Tree sap, water spots, and many other contaminants are acidic. If you do not treat them early they will start to melt through the layers of your car. First they go through the clear coat. Then into the paint. Then into the metal surface underneath. And eventually the metal starts to rust. Once it reaches that stage — there is nothing we can do. The damage is permanent and beyond repair by any detailing service.
⚠️ Important: Tree sap and water spots are acidic. If ignored they will eat through your clear coat, paint, and metal — ending in permanent rust damage that no detailer can fix. Act fast.
Prevention and What Not to Do
What advice do you give car owners to prevent these hard to remove stains?
The advice is simple — try to take care of it as soon as you notice it. If you can remove it yourself do it. If you cannot remove it call someone — us or any professional. The most important thing is to get rid of those stains quickly. Because after a certain point they might be stuck with you forever.
Are there products car owners can try at home before calling a professional?
In the early stages yes — there are tar removers and adhesive removers available that car owners can try at home. If those products do not work then it is time to call a professional because the contamination has likely bonded deeper and will need paint correction to fully remove.
What is the biggest mistake car owners make when trying to remove something themselves?
The biggest mistake we see with interior stains is using degreasers or heavy chemical products that are not meant for car interiors. When you use the wrong product on a fabric or leather stain you do not just fail to remove it — you add a product stain on top of the original stain. Now we have double the problem to deal with. Always use products that are designed specifically for automotive interiors.
Our Final Message to Hampton Roads Car Owners
What is your final message to Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads car owners dealing with stains right now?
If you are dealing with stains, tree sap, water spots, pet hair, or any kind of contamination on your interior or exterior — do not wait. The longer you leave it the harder and more expensive it becomes to fix. We offer full interior and exterior detailing, paint correction, and ceramic coating — which provides the best long term protection against stains, water spots, and contamination. With ceramic coating on your car you will not have to deal with most of these problems nearly as often. Act fast. Protect your car. And call us before the damage becomes permanent.
